Albert the Quaker and PeeWee

Albert the QuakerAlbert's hatchday was May 29, 1994, so he's a whopping FOUR YEARS OLD. As many of you know, he was my first bird; my first pet as a grown-up, and I hand-fed and weaned him.

Since that time, Albert and I have lived through credit-card flattening bouts with aspergillosis, metal poisoning, plucking, and a pseudonoma infection. In the typical way of quakers, he has endured all sorts of tortures to nurse him back to health, including many oral medications and even me giving him injections (ewww!!)....and has never held a grudge. He has now been medicine-free the last several months, for the first time in his short birdy life.

He loves to play. He is rarely content to just be held, but must be playing one of the many games he has taught me. Albert also loves to sing, like many of the birdies in Quakerville. His favorite, to the tune of Popeye the Sailorman, is ?Albert the Quaker Bird (err-err)?.

Albert believes he is a very, very pretty bird. Just ask him! If you tell him he is sooo cute, he puffs up with pride. If you ask him to show you his pretty wings, he gladly lifts them up.

What has he given me in return for me keeping him healthy and safe? First and foremost, he is a constant and large presence in my life, and a real source of joy and comfort. He has also given me a profound appreciation for all creatures who can't speak for themselves. I've joined the Audobon Society and the WWF; and support the US and local Humane Societies. I can no longer ignore incidences of animal abuse.

I think I'm a far better person, all because one little birdie loves me.
