Sam, My Heart
A Tribute to Sam, the African Grey Parrot

sam1st.jpg (28460 bytes)     Sam was born on December 6th, the Feast of St. Nicholas, 1993, which I always thought was very appropriate, as Christmas was his favorite holiday and the Christmas tree was one big forbidden "bird toy". It always amazed me that he would try to leap into it whenever we passed it. He was just fascinated with all the hanging objects and flashing colored lights. But that really didn’t surprise me, as Sam was what most people would call very "ungrey".

Before I brought Sam home, I was as prepared as a new parrot owner could be. I was armed with knowledge from "The Guide to the Well Behaved Parrot", and, even though I had not stumbled upon the "Pet Bird Report" yet, I read everything Sally wrote that I could get my hands on. The first and most important lesson learned from Sally was, "if something did not feel right for my bird, I should not do it", so when Sam’s breeder told me Sam was "snookering" me when he wouldn’t convert to pellets cold turkey, that he would get hungry enough eventually--it didn’t feel right, so, thank God, I ignored the advice.
